2. Explain the following statements with reasons.

Ans. (i) Archives and libraries publish research journals, informative pamphlets, leaflets, posters, etc. to spread knowledge and information among the people. (ii) The sources of history and all the books of history that are available today are the result of diligent work of several historians.  (iii) Institutes like libraries, museums and archives conserve and preserve this special historical heritage.

(2) Only trained persons, who are duly qualified can take up the tasks involved in the work of conservation and preservation. (Nov. ’20; July ’22)

 (1) Sthalakosh

Ans. (i) To study History we need geographical information and these informations are available in Sthalakosh or Encyclopaedias.  (ii) ‘Sthanapothi’ (14th century C.E.) is the name of one encyclopaedic text, which is composed by Muni Vyas of Mahanubhav sect. It describes all those places visited by Chakradhar Swami, the founder of Mahanubhav sect. It gives us an inkling about Maharashtra in those days. It also gives details about the time, place and background of the events described in
‘Leelacharitra’. Hence, it is a very good source for writing about the life of Chakradhar Swami.  It gives details about the time, place and background of the events described in ‘Leelacharitra’. (iii) Another Sthalakosh is ‘Prachin Bharatiya Sthalakosh’,compiled by Siddheshwarshstri Chitrav. It provides information about various places mentioned in Vedic literature, Kautiliya Arthashastra, Panini’s Grammar, Valmiki Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas and mediaeval Sanskrit literature.

(2) Vishwakosh

Ans. (4) Saraswati Mahal Granthalay

Ans. (i) The ‘Saraswati Mahal Granthalay’ in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu was built in 16th – 17th century, during the times of Nayak dynasty. (ii) In 1675 CE Vyankojiraje Bhosale conquered Thanjavur and established his independent rule. (iii) Vyankojiraje Bhosale and his successors kept expanding ‘Saraswati Mahal Granthalaya’.
(iv) Sarfojiraje Bhosale contributed the most in this expansion. (v) In 1918 the library was renamed as ‘The Thanjavur Maharaja Sarfoji’s Saraswati Mahal Library’ in his honour.

(1) Why is library management important? (March ’19; Sept. ’21; July ’22)

Ans. (i) Libraries are the store houses of knowledge and information. (ii) Library science is very closely related to Management Science, Information Technology and the field of Education. (iii) Libraries perform various tasks like collecting books, arranging them systematically, conservation and preservation of those books, dissemination of information sources etc. (iv) Library Management is important to make books available to readers as per his requirement and also to complete all the tasks with the help of computerised system.

 (2) Which tasks are important in archives management? (Nov. ’20)

Ans.  (i) Preserving documents with important content in their original condition, preparing indexes and creating accurate systems of retrieval of documents are the important tasks in the management of archives. (ii) It is also important to provide reliable sources and to manage computerised systems with information technology.
