2. Explain the following statements with reasons.

(1) Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti came to be established.
Ans.
(1) In the meeting of labours on 7th November 1955, S. M. Joshi proposed a resolution to create Samyukta Maharashtra with Mumbai and Vidarbha. (2) Later a grand march was led by Senapati Bapat towards Vidhan Sabha. (3) On the same evening an open meeting was conducted on Kamgar Maidan with a mob of around 50 thousand led by Comrade Dange. (4) They decided to hold a one day token strike on 21st November 1955 to accelerate the Samyukta Maharashtra movement. (5) However, as the issue of the demand of the Marathi speaking people started becoming complicated, discontent spread throughout the state. (6) Thereafter, a meeting was conducted on 6th February 1956, under the Chairmanship of Keshavrao Jedhe at Tilak Smarak Mandir in Pune. (7) Here, a Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed with its Executive Council including Comrade Shripad Amrut Dange as the President, Dr. T. R. Naravane as Vice President and S. M. Joshi as General secretary.

(2) The role of newspapers was important in Samyukta Maharashta Movement.

(1) The newspapers such as Prabodhan.Kesari, Sakai, Navakal, Navyug, Prabhatmany .worked for awakening of the people. (2) Acharya Atre started the ‘Maratha’ newspaper which played an important role in Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. (3) Balasaheb Thackeray took up the pen name ‘Mavla’ and drew caricatures to make the movement comprehensive. (4) Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe, Shahir Amar Sheikh and Shahir D. N. Gavankar through their writings aroused public awakening on a large scale.

3.Write short notes.

(1) Samyukta Maharashtra Parishad.
Ans.
(1) On 28 July, ‘Maharashtra Ekikaran Parishad’ was called at Mumbai. Shankarrao Dev was its president. (2) It passed a resolution that all Marathi speaking regions should be included in one state. (3) This should also include Marathi speaking regions of Mumbai, Central provinces as well as Marathwada and Gomantak.

(2) Contribution of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti.

. (1) On 6th February, 1956, a meeting was conducted under the Chairmanship of Keshavrao jedhe at Tilak Smarak Mandir in Pune. (2) The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti declared its Executive Council. (3) The Samiti was responsible for spreading the movement to the rural parts of Maharashtra. (4) In 1957, Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, and Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections were held. (5) The Samiti was a huge success. (6) These results made it clear that the voters were against a bilingual state and in favour of Samyukta Maharashtra.
