Spot the Error (Subject-Verb Agreement)
What is a Subject?
A subject is who or what the sentence is about. The subject does the action in a sentence.
📌 Examples of Subjects:
- A boy (Who is doing the action?)
- The dog (What is doing the action?)
- She (Who is doing the action?)
- My mom (Who is doing the action?)
- A bird (What is doing the action?)
🟢 The subject can be one person/thing (Singular) or more than one person/thing (Plural).
Different Types of Subjects
- Singular Subject (One person or thing)
✅ A girl plays.
✅ The dog barks.
✅ He runs fast.
✅ My mom cooks food. - Plural Subject (More than one person or thing)
✅ Girls play.
✅ The dogs bark.
✅ They run fast.
✅ My parents cook food.
🚫 Wrong: The girl play. (❌ “play” should be “plays”)
🚫 Wrong: The dogs barks. (❌ “barks” should be “bark”)
Special Subjects & How They Work
🔹 Subjects with “I” and “You”
💡 “I” and “You” do NOT follow the singular rule!
✅ I play every day.
✅ You run fast.
🚫 Wrong: I plays. (❌ “plays” should be “play”)
🚫 Wrong: You runs. (❌ “runs” should be “run”)
🔹 Subjects with “He, She, It”
💡 “He, She, It” → Add “s” to the verb
✅ He eats an apple.
✅ She sings a song.
✅ It jumps high.
🚫 Wrong: He eat an apple. (❌ “eat” should be “eats”)
🚫 Wrong: She sing a song. (❌ “sing” should be “sings”)
🔹 Subjects with “They, We”
💡 “They, We” → Do NOT add “s” to the verb
✅ They play football.
✅ We go to school.
🚫 Wrong: They plays football. (❌ “plays” should be “play”)
🚫 Wrong: We goes to school. (❌ “goes” should be “go”)
What is a Verb?
A verb is an action word. It tells us what someone or something is doing.
📌 Examples of Verbs:
- eat 🍎
- run 🏃♂️
- jump 🐰
- sing 🎤
- play ⚽
🔹 A verb changes depending on the subject.
Types of Verbs
- “Be” Verbs (is, are, am, was, were)
✅ He is happy.
✅ They are happy.
✅ I am a boy.
✅ She was at school.
✅ We were playing.
🚫 Wrong: They is happy. (❌ “is” should be “are”)
🚫 Wrong: I are a boy. (❌ “are” should be “am”)
- “Have” Verbs (has, have)
✅ She has a toy.
✅ They have toys.
✅ I have a book.
🚫 Wrong: She have a toy. (❌ “have” should be “has”)
🚫 Wrong: They has toys. (❌ “has” should be “have”)
- “Do” Verbs (does, do)
✅ He does his homework.
✅ They do their homework.
🚫 Wrong: He do his homework. (❌ “do” should be “does”)
🚫 Wrong: They does their homework. (❌ “does” should be “do”)
Golden Rule: Match the Subject and Verb
👉 If ONE person or thing is doing the action → Add “s” to the verb
👉 If MORE THAN ONE person or thing is doing the action → Do NOT add “s” to the verb
💙 ONE person/thing → Verb + “s”
💚 MORE than one → No “s”
