How did Odysseus plan to defeat the Trojans?

Ans. Odysseus planned to build a huge wooden horse so that some of their best fighters can hide inside horse. Then they would burn their tents and pretend to sail away in their ships. But instead of sailing away, they would return in the night. When the Trojans were asleep, they would attack the city and burn
and kill.  

What was the reason for Troy to rejoice and celebrate?

Ans. The reason for Troy to rejoice and celebrate was that the war was over after ten long years and the siege had ended.

Was it enough to use the wooden horse to hide ?

Ans. Yes, the horse was big enough to hide the best fighters inside it. It was big enough that skillful engineer, and the greatest heroes, Menelaus, Odysseus himself, and others entered it

What was done to make the Trojans take it inside the city?

Ans. As per Odysseus plan, they left behind a solider to persuade the Trojans to drag the horse in their city. He gave them a false story of wooden horse as an offering to the God of the Sea. The soldier further added that the Greeks also wanted to kill him as sacrifice to the sea-god but he escaped and hid from them. They built such a huge horse to make sure that the Trojans would not be able to carry it into the city as the luck would then go to the Trojans and not the Greeks. His story was so convincing that the Trojans believed him. They then broke down part of their strong wall  and dragged the horse in.

How did the cunning Greek explain the presence of such a
large wooden horse?

Ans. The cunning Greek explained the presence of such a large wooden horse by saying that they had made this horse and left it as an offering to the god of the Sea as they were afraid of the long voyage back home.

Do you think the Greeks and Trojans were superstitions ?
Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. I think Greeks were not superstitious but used a clever trick to get entry. The Trojans on the other hand were superstitious as they believed in the fake story. The Trojans thought that if they got the wooden horse inside their city they would be blessed by the
Sea God.

What reckless, thoughtless step did the Trojans take?

Ans. The reckless step the Trojans took was to make a hole in the wall and drag the huge wooden horse inside the city.

How did the Greeks enter the city of Troy?

Ans. When the cunning Greek who had been left behind the Greek fleet returning to the shores of Troy, he crept to the wooden horse and gave the signal. The side of the horse opened, and the Greeks who wear inside climbed out and opened the gates. The whole Greek army entered the city.

How did the Greek ships remain hidden from Troy?

Ans. The Greek ships remained hidden from Troy by lowering their sails and dropping their anchors behind an island away from the coast.

What distressing sounds and sights could be witnessed at Troy, that fateful night?

Ans. That fateful night, Troy was filled with the sight of leaping flames as the Greeks had set fire to the houses, temples, towers and palaces. There were sounds of people shouting and the noise of weapons and the cries of weeping women.

What was the destiny of the royal family of Troy and that of Helen?

Ans. Old King Priam was killed with all his brave sons. Hector’s wife and his old mother and sister were carried off as slaves by the conquerors. Helen was forgiven by King Menelaus and she went back with him.

How could the fall of Troy have been avoided ?

Ans. The Fall of Troy could have been avoided if the Trojans have listened to their wise priest who had warned them that the horse could be a trick to destroy Troy. They should also not have been superstitious and taken the horse inside the city believing that it would bring them luck. Also if they hadn’t broken down a part of their own walls which had protected the city for so many years.

5. Form pairs. Imagine you are a pair of Trojans and you have come to know about Odysseus’s plan. Make a counter plan to defeat the Greeks. Write down your plan as you would explain it to your fellow Trojans.

Ans.
      Listen Trojan, I have come to know from one of our Spy about Odysseus’s plan that the big wooden horse that will come close to us won’t be an offering to the god of the sea but it is a conspiracy. There will be many soldiers hidden inside that  wooden horse who will attack us on reaching here. So I have a plan, we will pretend to show them that we are assuming wooden horse as our destiny and as an offering to the god of the sea. But as soon as that horse will come close to us we will destroy it with cannons and save our Troy.

Suddenly a speeding motorcyclist tries to cut across, from the wrong side. He is about to collide with a loaded truck. He applies the brakes. He falls and slides out with his bike from under the truck. He comes out unscathed on the other side.’ – When an event, which has occurred in the past, is narrated in the Present Tense to create a dramatic effect its Tense is called the ‘Dramatic Present Tense’ – Now try to relate Jayant’s sci-fi story, in brief, in the dramatic past tense.

       As Jayant walks, he finds a bank door which is closed but there is no lock on it. He suspects something, he wears his magic glass and what is seen to him is that some bandits are trying to steal money from the bank officer’s by heading gun on them. Immediately he reports this to the police, the police reaches the spot and surrounds the bank from all sides. He gets to know one more thing from the magic glass that there is no bullet inside the gun, when he informs this to the police, the police takes advantage of this opportunity and arrests all the bandits.
