(1) What is a unit of measurement?
Answer: The unit in which a measurement is expressed is called the unit of measurement.
(2) How can a thread and ruler measure a curved surface?
Answer: Place the thread along the curved surface and mark its beginning and ending points. Straighten the thread and measure the distance between the marks using a ruler.
(3) Why must an appropriate instrument be selected?
Answer: Objects differ in size, shape and the accuracy required. Using an instrument suited to the object helps obtain a convenient and accurate measurement.

Answer: Celsius or Fahrenheit, according to the need.

Formula: Thickness of one page = Total thickness of all pages ÷ Total number of pages
Thickness of one page = 20 mm ÷ 200
Thickness of one page = 0.1 mm
Answer: The thickness of one page is 0.1 mm.
Thickness of one page = 0.1 mm
(3–4) Thickness of one note
Formula: Thickness of one note = Total thickness of the bundle ÷ Number of notes
Thickness of one note = 10 mm ÷ 100
Thickness of one note = 0.1 mm
Answer: The thickness of one note is 0.1 mm.
A single note is too thin to measure conveniently with an ordinary ruler. Measuring many notes together gives a larger, clearer reading.

Q.7 Give scientific reasons.
(1) A ruler should be read from directly above the mark.
Answer: Looking from the left or right can make the mark appear shifted. Looking directly above the mark helps record the correct reading.
(2) A range of 35°C to 42°C is sufficient for a clinical thermometer.
Answer: Human body temperature normally lies near 37°C. Therefore, the limited range from 35°C to 42°C is sufficient for measuring body temperature.
(3) Many pages are measured together to find one page’s thickness.
Answer: One page is too thin to measure accurately using an ordinary ruler. Measuring the total thickness of many pages and dividing it by their number gives the thickness of one page.
