(1) Importance of a reference point
Answer: Whenever distance is measured, it must begin from a fixed object or specific point. This fixed point is called a reference point. It gives everyone the same starting position and helps mark or compare distances correctly.
(2) Parts and working of a laboratory thermometer
Answer: A laboratory thermometer has a long, narrow, hollow glass tube with one end sealed. A small bulb at its lower end contains mercury or coloured alcohol. A fine capillary tube extends from the bulb through the glass tube. When the bulb receives heat, the liquid expands and rises through the capillary tube. The temperature is recorded from the mark where the liquid level becomes stable.
(3) Any two precautions for using a laboratory thermometer
Answer:
  1. Keep the thermometer straight and vertical.
  2. Do not allow its bulb to touch the bottom or sides of the container.
  3. Read the stabilized liquid level at eye level.
