Ans. The Harappan Civilisation covered an area of approximately 1.5 million square kilometres. It extended from Manda in Jammu and Kashmir in the north to Dholavira and Lothal in Gujarat and further up to Daimabad in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra. To the west, it extended as far as Balochistan in present-day Pakistan, while to the east it reached Alamgirpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Ans. Village settlements were established where needs such as availability of water, fertile land and a system of transport were satisfied. All these factors were available on the riverbanks. Therefore, ancient river valley civilisations developed in the vicinity of rivers.
